The Effects of Texting on Your Neck

On average, how many minutes a day do you think you spend looking down at your phone? Whether you’re spending a lot of time texting or conducting any other business on your phone or not, the impact on your neck after even a few minutes can cause you a tremendous amount of issues.

Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, the Chief of Spine Surgery with New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine, has studied this effect and found that the force of having your head tilted forward for long periods of time has damaging results on the cervical area of your spine.

A human head weighs around 5kg. Therefore, when you are standing or sitting with good posture (which is defined as head sitting squarely on your shoulders with your shoulders down and back), there is around 5kg of force straight downward on your cervical spine. If you lean forward just slightly, creating a 15 degree angle in your neck, that amount of pressure more than doubles, increasing to 12kg. In essence, it is like your head now weighs 12kg which would put an extreme amount of pressure on your neck while trying to hold it up. Bend your head forward a little more and it gets even worse. For instance, Dr. Hansraj found that a 30 degree forward tilt raises the pressure to roughly 18kg, and a 45 degree bend means that your neck is trying to deal with just under 22kg of pressure!

Being aware of this fact is the first step to correcting the issue. The second step involves spending less time on your phone, and raising it to eye level when you do need to access it. Of course, regular chiropractic adjustments can help put your neck back in place too, but remember that it is always better and easier to prevent an issue than it is to treat it.

Vitamin D Offers Chronic Pain Relief

Researchers from the University of Adelaide have been conducting a study to investigate the efficacy of treating patients with chronic non-specific musculoskeletal pain. The research team has been looking at different treatment options, such as physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, to determine which is the most effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life for these patients. The results of the study will be used to inform future treatments and help improve the care of those suffering from chronic pain.

The effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation for chronic pain is still uncertain and needs more research. Some studies have suggested that vitamin D helps to reduce inflammation, which can help alleviate some types of chronic pain and there are no known negative side-effects. Vitamin D supplementation is readily available and a relatively cheap option.

Vitamin D deficiency is becoming an increasingly common issue due to the fact that many people are spending most of their time indoors. With the majority of people working indoors and not getting enough sun exposure, their Vitamin D levels are dropping. Doctors are now encouraging their patients to go outside for a little bit each day in order to get the necessary Vitamin D that the body needs. Sunlight is essential for the body to be able to absorb Vitamin D and maintain healthy levels. Without enough sun exposure, people are at risk of developing Vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to a variety of health issues.

Adding vitamin D to your diet is a great way to help reduce symptoms of chronic pain. This can be done in addition to receiving regular chiropractic care. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps to regulate the body’s calcium and phosphate levels, which in turn helps to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy. Vitamin D also helps to reduce inflammation, which can be a major contributor to chronic pain. By supplementing your diet with vitamin D, in addition to regular chiropractic care, you can help to reduce the symptoms of chronic pain.
